Friendly Visitors Program

Friendly Visitors matches compassionate volunteers with older adults whose health and well-being may improve with meaningful social connection. Volunteers make weekly home visits to seniors, with a telephone contact in between visits. They may engage in activities or shared hobbies, such as listening to music, reading or playing games, or sharing any other interests they hold in common. Volunteers also may help seniors to participate in social activities outside of the home.

Our expectation is to see improvement over time in the health and well-being of our senior neighbors as a result of the increased social contact they experience from being matched with Friendly Visitors. Additionally, the program links senior neighbors to programs or resources that could help them with other unmet needs they may have.

Before they are matched, all volunteers and seniors are interviewed and carefully screened to ensure the most compatible and helpful matches are made

Start-up funding for the program was through a grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care.
